Most people know Genioplasty as chin surgery or repositioning. This surgery is done to fix chins that are too small or don’t line up right or to reduce the size of the chin.
Genioplasty can help people whose chins are too small or are shrinking. If your chin is too small compared to the rest of your face, the treatment could make your nose look too long.
Suppose you’re curious about how Genioplasty works. In that case, Cache Valley Facial Plastics is here to help you discover what the treatment is all about. Check out this blog post for more details.
All About Genioplasty?
Plastic surgeons often use chin implants or Genioplasty to balance the features of a younger patient. Genioplasty may be used in addition to another cosmetic procedure for a more mature patient.
Either chin implants or repositioning the bone that supports the chin can be used to change the shape of the chin (sliding Genioplasty). There are many different kinds of implants made from
additional materials, such as silicone or other substances.
Genioplasty is often done with neck liposuction, nose surgery (Rhinoplasty), a neck lift, or laser skin resurfacing.
Genioplasty at Cache Valley Facial Plastics
At Cache Valley Facial Plastics, surgery is done in the OR, stitches are taken out after seven days, and you can’t do certain things for 3–4 weeks. Most of the time, people choose to have Genioplasty because they want to look better, not because they have a medical problem.
Pain, bruises, and swelling can make the skin look shiny, but as the area heals, the skin will soften and look more normal. Candidates for Genioplasty must be in good health, have no active diseases or serious health problems, and have realistic expectations about how the surgery will turn out.
Different Kinds of Genioplasty
For added knowledge and information, there are two main kinds of Genioplasty: sliding genioplasty and chin implants.
Sliding Genioplasty
In a sliding genioplasty, the chin bone is cut away from the rest of the jaw with a saw and moved to fix a chin deficiency. An osseous genioplasty is another name for this.
This kind of Genioplasty is suggested for people with severe retrogenia or a chin that sticks out too far from the rest of their face. It can also help fix chins that are too long and stick out too far forward.
Chin Enhancements
Chin implants can be used to change the shape of the chin, make it bigger, or move it forward. You can do this through surgery or by giving a shot.
For surgical chin augmentation, plastic material is put into the chin and stuck to the bone. Most implants are made of artificial alloplastic materials.
For nonsurgical chin augmentation, needles inject fillers, like body fat, into the chin to make it look better.
Pre-care Method for Genioplasty
Cache Valley Facial Plastics recommends our patients follow these care methods before going through the procedure for better results:
- Do not take aspirin or products with aspirin for two weeks before surgery.
- Do not take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for a week before surgery.
- If you are getting IV sedation or general anesthesia, Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before.
- Wear clothes that aren’t too tight, like a shirt that you can pull over your head or button up the front, and pants that are easy to move around.
- Don’t wear jewelry, makeup, lotions, oils, or perfumes to your surgery. The morning of surgery is the best time to take a long shower or bath.
- On the day of surgery, you can do the lab work at the hospital. Women of childbearing age will have to get a pregnancy test. If it returns positive, you’ll get your money back.
- Children under 18 must be with a parent or legal guardian.
- It would help if you had a ride home.
- Keep your wounds and dressings clean and dry to keep you away from getting sick.
- You can stop bleeding if you don’t cough, stoop, strain, or work. Surgery is usually stressful and requires a lot of rest, relaxation, and good food.
- If you use tobacco, you should stop before surgery and not start again for 3–4 weeks. If someone in your home smokes, please ask them to go outside.
- As much as smoking can stop you from getting better, so can being around other people who smoke.
Aftercare Method for Genioplasty
Like the pre-care method, we also recommend these aftercare ways to keep your results better with Genioplasty.
- If you are prescribed narcotics for pain, Do not drive until you have been off them for 24 hours.
- Follow the directions on the prescription, and don’t take more than what is needed.
- If the rash, vomiting, or feeling sick doesn’t go away, stop taking it and call our office.
- If your painkiller already has Tylenol, Do not add more Tylenol. If it’s not against the rules, Tylenol and Ibuprofen can be given at different times to control most post-operative pain.
- After surgery, you should drink a lot of fluids and start eating as soon as you ca
- Don’t bend over, strain, or lift more than 10 pounds for two weeks.
- You can pat the surgery site with clean, wet gauze.
- For the first 24 hours, you can make a cold compress by putting frozen peas or corn in a plastic bag.
- Do not take a shower for a day.
- Do not get the surgery site wet for four weeks.
- Most of the time, stitches are taken out seven days after surgery.
- Swelling and bruising can take 2-4 weeks to resolve. Some parts of the body may feel numb and tingly for months.

Call our office immediately after hours if you have purulent drainage, redness around the surgical site, fever, a sudden increase in pain, a sudden increase in bruises, or bleeding that you can’t stop.
Risks & Possible Risks
Some risks could happen with a genioplasty. Aside from the usual pain and swelling that follow surgery, patients may also experience some unpleasant side effects, some of which may require treatment or even more surgery. These things are:
- Nerve damage because the mental nerve is in the wrong place.
- Numbness at the surgery site.
- Infection
- Discomfort caused by the plates and screws
- Results that don’t look good
- Reaction to anesthesia from an allergy
To avoid risks and problems, patients must undergo a screening or physical exam before surgery and a follow-up exam after the procedure.
