Brow lifts are the future of eye area rejuvenation. One fact we need to contend with eventually is this – sagging eyebrows, crow’s feet, or lax eyelids cannot be treated by all eye creams in the world every time. Even with as much faith, we might have, believing that skincare products alone are powerful enough to tighten and lift your skin will not forever be the case.
The fact of the matter is that many, if not all, of these products will eventually need a helping hand later on. And with that being said – a brow lift might be the best solution for sagging eyebrows and overall eye area rejuvenation.
What is a Brow Lift?
A brow lift is a longer-term solution in improving frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and sagging brows. It is a surgical procedure combined with other treatments, including Blepharoplasty or surgery for repairing droopy eyelids. The process usually takes between an hour or two to perform and is performed in the office.
As we age, our brows typically move down. The distance between our eyebrows and eyelashes shortens as the skin and soft tissues around our eyes lose elasticity. As a result, the lower positioning of our eyebrows can make us look tired, angry, or sad, even if we are not. But with a brow lift, we can have our eyebrows raised, and have a restored, refreshed, and more pleasing appearance than ever. Considering to have a brow lift might be the best way to go if you have low or sagging brows that contribute to your upper eyelids’ sagging.
The Procedure and What to Do
Before the Procedure:
To get things starting, you will have to talk to a facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon about a brow lift, how it works, and the results it provides. During the first visit, your surgeon will likely need and offer you the following:
- Your medical history and background.
An initial preparation you would need to do with your doctor is to answer your current and past medical conditions. Talking about any medications you are currently taking or have taken before and any surgeries you have had will eventually help you and your doctor prepare for the surgery. It will also help if you tell your doctor about allergies you have to any medications.
- A physical exam.
It is needed that your doctor examines and measures different parts of your face with your eyes both open and closed. This step will help determine the treatment options necessary for the brow lift procedure you will undergo eventually. The doctor might also take photographs that will be part of your medical records.
- Expectation discussions.
Your doctor explains how a brow lift works; what you are hoping for and will and should expect in terms of appearance after the procedure. Make sure you listen and understand the benefits and risks of having a brow lift to help you and your recovery afterward.
During the Procedure:
The brow lift procedure is done in a hospital or an outpatient surgical facility. During the process, you will be handled and guided to become comfortable with a general anesthetic’s aid, who will render you unconscious.
Once everything is set to proceed, your doctor will go on with the brow lift procedure and might use one of the following techniques:
- Endoscopic brow lift. This technique makes use of several tiny incisions behind the hairline. Next, an endoscope, a light with a small camera, is mounted on the end of a long thin tube inserted through one of the incisions. This step will help your surgeon view underlying muscles and tissues. Through another incision, your surgeon will use another instrument, lift the tissues on your forehead, and anchor them in place using sutures and small screws. These incisions are then stitched and closed with the use of small clips.
- Coronal brow lift. Across the top of your head, your surgeon will create an incision behind your hairline. This incision will be from ear to ear, primarily on the top of your head. Then, your surgeon will lift your forehead into its new position. This step will make the scalp in front of the incision overlap the scalp behind it. The overlapping scalp is then removed, while the remaining scalp is sewn together. Coronal brow lifts are generally not used for people who have high hairlines, thin hair, or those who have a high likelihood of eventually losing their hair.
- Hairline brow lift. This technique will make an incision between the top of your forehead until the beginning of your hairline. Then, a small amount of skin and tissue is removed from the top of your forehead, not from your scalp. This step will result in your hairline not being pulled back. Usually, someone who has a high receding hairline gets a hairline brow lift. But depending upon healing, a scar might become visible along the hairline.
After the Procedure:
Your forehead might be loosely wrapped To help minimize the swelling after a brow lift. In the first few days after a brow lift, specific instructions on how to care for your incisions will be given to you like:
- Resting with your head elevated
- Taking recommended pain medication by your doctor
- Cold compress application to relieve swelling
- Avoid exposing excessive pressure or motion to your incisions
- As incisions heal, expect itching and numbness, which lessens over time.
Your doctor will likely remove the bandages that cover your incisions in a day up to three, while sutures are typically removed between seven to ten days after surgery. Incision lines will eventually fade. Using makeup may help to conceal any prolonged bruising in the meantime. It is best to ask when you can resume daily activities like washing and drying your hair and bathing. Swelling might last several weeks, so ask your doctor right away.
How Long Does It Last?
No cosmetic treatment is entirely permanent, but brow lifts can last for a long time, usually for 10 to 12 years on average. Factors like age and skincare routine will contribute and determine how long your treatment will last. Brow lifts are more cost-effective cosmetic treatments that can help hold off the natural aging process for as long as possible.
Does It Affect the Eyelids?
It is pretty standard for people to have droopy lids and brows, whether or not both of them are functionally or medically burdensome. Contrary to popular belief, brow lifts don’t negatively affect the eyelids; if not, it’s the other way around. People sometimes need both a functional brow lift and eyelid surgery or functional eyelid surgery with an optional brow lift. At the same time, others either benefit most from a brow lift and cosmetic eyelid surgery or both cosmetic lid and brow lift.
As much as they are popular and readily available, eye creams can only go so far. So, when it seems that things aren’t working themselves out, maybe it’s time to turn to brow lifts to get the results you want.
